Ohangwena governor Sebastian Ndeitunga said late founding president Sam Nujoma taught him bravery, honesty, hardwork and loyalty to the governance of Namibia’s independence.
He said that Nujoma was a strong advocate for peace and prosperity, and a disciplinarian of note.
Ndeitunga said he was shocked to learn about Nujoma’s death because the liberation struggle icon was so indelibly linked to Namibia’s history.
“I was shocked and I could not believe it. At first I thought it a bad dream because I was asleep when I received the call … We have lost our leader that united us all as one Namibia, a man that truly loved his nation and he never wavered,” he said.
Ndeitunga said the world is changed without Nujoma and other pan-African liberation struggle icons, but that it is important for the nation to accept his death.
“We will miss him as our commander of the liberation struggle, commander in chief of the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia – the military wing of Swapo that waged the war against the military system of apartheid until its final demise,” he said.
Eenhana mayor Omri-Onn Kavandje said Nujoma was not only a revolutionary and anti-apartheid activist, but also a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the liberation and development of Namibia.
“Dr Nujoma was truly a president of the people – an icon of resilience, selflessness, and dedication. His legacy will forever be etched in the history of our nation. As we mourn this great loss, I call upon all future leaders to emulate his exemplary character, patriotism and unwavering commitment to the people of Namibia. May his soul rest in eternal peace. His vision and sacrifices will continue to inspire generations to come,” Kavandje said.
