The Forum of German-Speaking Namibians said late founding president Sam Nujoma’s “invaluable” contribution to freedom of speech and expression ensured the protection of their mother language, German.
In a statement issued by chairperson Harald Hecht on Monday, the forum paid tribute to Nujoma after his death on Saturday evening due to ill health.
Hecht said freedom of speech and expression being entrenched in the Constitution “paved the way for peaceful cohabitation and the continued cultural diversity in our motherland”.
Hecht said the negotiated settlement for Namibia’s Independence laid the foundation for Namibia’s future being built on the foundations of liberty, unity and solidarity.
“Nujoma spearheaded the liberation struggle for the independence of Namibia with vision, vigour and determination for over 30 years which earned him the highest respect and recognition locally and internationally,” Hecht added.
He said the late president was also instrumental in developing and implementing the policy of national reconciliation through the ‘One Namibia, One Nation’ slogan.
