PARLIAMENT yesterday moved a step closer to officially bestowing the title of Founding Father on former President Sam Nujoma.
Debate on the Conferment of Status of Founding Father of the Namibian Nation Bill started in the National Council yesterday. The only speaker on the issue, Jhonny Hakaye, urged his colleagues to waste no time in passing “this straightforward, self-explanatory piece of legislation” so that it could form part of Nujoma’s “Christmas gifts from the entire people of this country”.Hakaye’s statements were strongly supported by the rest of the House, most of whom were dressed in the red, blue and green colours of the Swapo Party.”What is it that we are disputing here,” Hakaye asked.”The whole of mankind is honouring and respecting their distinct sons and daughters of their lands.Vladimir Lenin of the then USSR, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Madiba Nelson Mandela of South Africa, and many more are such famous and genius names in contemporary politics. Why not comrade Sam Nujoma of Namibia? Why not? What is really up with us?” he asked amid cheers of fellow MPs.Supporting his request for the speedy passing of the bill, no other MPs spoke on the issue, and the bill has now gone on to the next phase of discussion.
