Nudo encourages youth involvement in politics

NATIONAL Unity Democratic Organisation president Ester Muinjangue says the involvement of the party’s youth in politics will help shape their future and that of the country.

Muinjangue was speaking during the party’s youth league mass meeting held in Windhoek on Saturday, where she said there is growing interest in youth politics globally.

“I want to see more young people than ever before engaging in local community campaigns and other political activities. You, young people, can change Namibia, can change Africa, and can change the world through politics by becoming actively, meaningfully and substantially involved through political parties and beyond,” she stated.

The Nudo president dismissed the notion that Namibian youth do not have the vision nor care about politics.

She argued that the youth have strongly-defined opinions, and that they are well-informed on current affairs.

She, however, expressed disappointment in the Nudo youth for not pronouncing themselves on the cutting of financial assistance to 12 000 students nationwide.

“I’m expecting the Nudo youth to raise issues, intervene where need be, and raise debates on national issues. This is how you navigate your direction, and influence the future. It is now, more than ever, for the Nudo youth wing to be heard on issues affecting young people,” she continued.

Muinjangue said it is pivotal for the youth to be engaged, especially on issues of education, training and health.

At the same meeting, the party’s secretary general Josef Kauandenge said Nudo will adopt a youth-oriented approach under the theme ‘The Time Is Now’, throughout the election campaign to bolster a changed political climate in Namibia.

“Therefore, as the youth of Nudo, let’s go out and make sure that we are all registered. Our target is to ensure that all youth who turned 18 years between 2015 and June 2019 will be part of the electorate who will make us the ruling party in the upcoming elections,” he added.

Kauandenge said he does not believe the youth are the leaders of tomorrow, but of today. He said in the past, their forefathers used to take up leadership roles at a young age.
