The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) board has extended the contract of statistician general Alex Shimuafeni by six months to ensure the completion of key projects and a smooth leadership transition.
According to a statement issued by the agency, Shimuafeni’s contract, which was initially set to end on 31 March, has now been extended until 30 September.
“The NSA board on 14 August 2025 resolved to extend the statistician general’s contract from 31 March until 30 September to ensure completion of critical projects and smooth handover,” the statement reads.
Shimuafeni was first appointed to the position on 1 April 2016 to lead the national statistics body.
His contract was renewed in 2021 for a second five-year term, running until 31 March.
The agency notes that the appointment of a statistician general is governed by Section 23 of the Statistics Act No. 9 of 2011, which requires the board, with approval from the director general of the National Planning Commission, to appoint a suitably qualified person with experience in statistics, information technology, economics, and related fields.
Meanwhile, deputy statistician general Ottilie Mwazi reached retirement age on 31 December 2025.
The NSA board extended her contract from 1 January until 31 March to ensure the completion of critical projects and a seamless transition while the recruitment process for her replacement is underway.
