Not guilty, Windhoek double family murder suspect claims

A WINDHOEK resident accused of murdering his wife and her cousin, and further trying to kill the cousin’s wife in a shooting incident in Katutura, pleaded not guilty to two charges of murder and a count of attempted murder in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

“I’m not guilty,” Angels Mikini told Magistrate Desmond Beukes in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura after Public Prosecutor Letta Amakali had read out the three charges he faces at this stage. Mikini (39) is facing two counts of murder, in which it is alleged that he shot dead his wife, Magdalena Maholland-Mikini (34), and her cousin, John Robert Orlam (41), at their home in Izak Kazongari Street in Katutura on the evening of May 17.Mikini is further accused of attempting to murder Orlam’s wife, Estelle Orlam, by shooting her during the same incident. The shooting was reportedly sparked by an argument about money.Maholland-Mikini died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.Orlam was shot about four times in the back.Mikini gave his plea to the charges after indicating that he would not need a lawyer to represent him when giving his plea.Except for saying that he was not guilty, Mikini gave no explanation for his plea.He remains in Police custody, and has to appear in court again on October 5.His case was postponed so that the Prosecutor General can decide on the charges and in which court he should be put on trial.Mikini (39) is facing two counts of murder, in which it is alleged that he shot dead his wife, Magdalena Maholland-Mikini (34), and her cousin, John Robert Orlam (41), at their home in Izak Kazongari Street in Katutura on the evening of May 17.Mikini is further accused of attempting to murder Orlam’s wife, Estelle Orlam, by shooting her during the same incident. The shooting was reportedly sparked by an argument about money.Maholland-Mikini died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.Orlam was shot about four times in the back.Mikini gave his plea to the charges after indicating that he would not need a lawyer to represent him when giving his plea.Except for saying that he was not guilty, Mikini gave no explanation for his plea.He remains in Police custody, and has to appear in court again on October 5.His case was postponed so that the Prosecutor General can decide on the charges and in which court he should be put on trial.
