Nored strike ends

The Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored) and its employees have reached an agreement to end the strike that began last Thursday.

The Mineworkers’ Union of Namibia (MUN) announced on Monday night that the agreement includes the payment of a 14th cheque for the 2024/25 financial year, a 4% salary increment for 2025/26, and a 4.3% increase for 2026/27.

“This resolve of workers who stood forum in defence of their legitimate demands,” MUN general secretary George Ampweya announced.

Workers last week went on strike demanding a 6% wage increment, as well as the payment of a 14th cheque for the 2024/25 financial year.

After months of failed negotiations, the workers received a certificate of unresolved dispute and announced their intention to strike.

Nored twice attempted to block the industrial action in court on the basis that its workers are essential.

After the High Court struck the urgent application off the roll, the strike began last Thursday.

Workers participated in the strike at the Rundu, Katima Mulilo, Opuwo, Ongwediva, Ondangwa, Ohangwena, Eenhana, Okongo, Nkurenkuru, Kongola, Outapi, and Okahao centres.

Monday marked the fifth day of the strike.
