TSUMEB residents celebrated ‘Winterfall’ with an electrifying bash headlined by South African singer and songwriter Nokwazi Dlamini, best known simply as Nokwazi, on 29 July.
The lively show was to introduce ‘Winterfall’ to Tsumeb, and was hosted by new kids on the events management scene, S&J Live Africa, a joint venture company owned by versatile business woman Jolandi Pedro Makambe and Sonja Shanukeni.
“This is our first show and it was a success. We managed to pull through without any investors or sponsors,” says Makambe.
The show was held at the Oscar Norich Stadium in the copper mining town.
“We intend to do it every year in all the towns, on the same lines as the annual Tsumeb Copper Festival,” says Makambe.
“Our next show is lined up for 2 September at the Ongwediva Trade Fair, and it will be christened the Ongwediva ‘Winterfall’,” she says.
Besides the talented house and Afro-soul musician, Nokwazi, who was the main attraction, top local artists including Ethnix, DJ Castro from Ynot, Pretty Vibes, Ms G and Yeezir, gave classy supporting acts, she says.
“We had stalls where people sold, food and other products. We also had a VIP tent where the who’s who enjoyed themselves in comfort, says Makambe.
Nokwazi has performed at many top events and occasions. Before going solo, she worked as a back-up singer for singers like Rebecca Malope, Chicco Twala and Brenda Fassie. Despite working with them for two decades, she only rose to prominence after embarking on a solo career.
Nokwazi has over 25 years of experience in the music industry, having embarked on her professional journey in 1996 when music producer Sizwe Zakho introduced her to the legendary Malope.
She became the back-up singer for Malope and with time, she became a member of Pure Magic and recorded many songs with the well-known gospel group.
