The kitchen has always been a place of comfort, family and expression for Michelle Nakokurejikene, also known to her growing online audience as NokooTheChef.
Born at Keetmanshoop, the 28-year-old creator grew up moving across Namibia due to her father’s work, living in towns like Rosh Pinah, Tsumeb, Karibib, Gobabis, Otjiwarongo, Lüderitz and Swakopmund.
Though Windhoek was home for many years, experiencing different communities across the country laid the foundation for her love of people and food.
“My love for cooking started when I was seven or eight years old, playing ‘house-house’ with other children,” Nakokurejikene recalls.
“I would always choose to be the mother, which meant I was always the one cooking.”
As she grew older, that childhood play turned into actual responsibility, she says.
After high school, while studying and living with her working sister, Nakokurejikene naturally took charge of preparing daily household meals.
Looking after her younger sisters during school holidays meant ensuring everyone was fed and dinner was ready when her mother returned from work.
That unique blend of cultural representation, homestyle recipes and accessible cooking quickly gained traction, leading to her nomination in the foodie content creator category at the upcoming MTC Content Creator Awards.
Recalling the moment she found out during the live announcement event at the Windhoek Showgrounds, Nakokurejikene says she was completely stunned.
“Seeing my name come up as the very first nominee was such a surreal moment. More than anything, the nomination made me feel seen. It made me realise that people recognise me not just as someone who enjoys cooking, but as a foodie content creator.”
Presentation, however, remains non-negotiable. “I am naturally a perfectionist,” she says.
“I pay attention to colours, textures and even which dish will complement the food. Everyone eats with their eyes first.”
Looking beyond the awards, she has big plans for her brand. With an upcoming brand collaboration with Choppies Namibia and plans to launch seasonal cooking classes titled Cooking & Dining with NokooTheChef, she is also setting her sights on long-form YouTube episodes, TV projects and eventually attending culinary school to become a certified chef.
Her advice to aspiring creators is straightforward: “You don’t need the perfect kitchen or expensive equipment. My very first cooking video was me cooking outside on an open fire. Use what you have and document the process.”
