The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested 19 people countrywide in corruption-related cases in November.
The accused range from government officials, local authority councillors and council employees.
Investigations into these cases date as far back as 2015.
Lawyer Kadhila Amoomo on Sunday explained that a person can still be prosecuted after five years, with a cut-off time set at 20 years.
Lawyer Richard Metcalfe has asked why the ACC is not targeting corruption cases dating back to before its establishment in 2008, since there is no prescription on pursuing corruption cases.
Political analyst Sakaria Johannes says making arrests during the election campaigning period is suspicious and questionable.
“However, if the arrests are not politically motivated, it is a good thing. For now, it is hard to tell, but let us see next year.
“If they continue with this good performance in tackling corruption, we will see the truth,” he says.
