An Open Letter to the Minister of Education SHOULD it be the goal of your Ministry to stop public education in Namibia, then it is getting close.
Should it, however, be your Ministry’s aim to bring education to a standstill in the Omaheke District, then you have reached it! At the beginning of the school holidays, a few days earlier than the official date – but one is used to this already – the children from the Gunichas School near Gobabis handed their parents a letter from the headmaster and the head of their hostel. It says parents should not send their children back to school in September, but should wait for a radio announcement. The reason: Since the start of the year, the school and hostel have been struggling to get the usual subsidy from the Ministry thus far without success.Nothing has been received and the school and hostel reserves have been depleted, the personnel cannot be paid and no food for the children (800 – 1 000) can be bought. The children report they were hungry in the second term! Unless something happens, like somebody doing some work for a change, the doors of Gunichas Hostel-School near Gobabis will remain closed for the rest of the year.I.
