A preliminary post-mortem report indicates no signs of physical assault or sexual violence in the death of Delysia Garoes (35).
Garoes’ body was found in a riverbed in the Gemengde area of Katutura in Windhoek early on Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says the report reveals no evidence of rape or external injuries. As a result, an inquest docket has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of Garoes’ death.
Early reports from the scene painted a grim picture that left the Katutura community in shock. Neighbours claimed they heard Garoes screaming for help while lying in the riverbed.
One resident reported that Garoes was conscious and whispering a name before she died, fuelling speculation that she may have been attacked.
“We found her in distress. She was crying out for someone to let her go,” said a neighbour who requested anonymity.
“We assumed the worst because of her condition and what we thought we heard.”
Her brother Fistus Garoeb (38) was devastated over her death.
“My sister was a joyful person. I rushed to help when I was called, but she was already gone,” he said.
Garoes, a mother of four, was known in the community for her kindness and warmth. Her death has sparked fear and outrage in the Gemengde area, especially among women who say they no longer feel safe.
Although initial observations by the Windhoek City Police suggested possible sexual assault, the latest forensic findings have shifted the investigations.
“No arrests have been made at this stage and police investigations continue,” say the police, who requested anyone with information to urgently come forward.
