The City of Windhoek says no fatality or injury has been reported in the capital following Saturday afternoon’s heavy rains.

An unspecified number of vehicles were, however, swept away.

The municipality in a notice said its emergency management service received reports of flooding in both the formal and informal areas of Windhoek on Saturday.

“Among the affected are the areas behind the Otjomuise Police Station, where several houses were flooded. Thankfully, no fatality or injury has been reported,” Lydia Amutenya, the city’s spokesperson, said.

She said preliminary assessments indicate that water flow at Otjomuise was obstructed by discarded tyres, causing flooding.

“Additionally, blocked culverts along Eneas Peter Nanyemba Street in road construction zones led to the flooding of nearby houses,” she said.

Amutenya said the city’s emergency services were working tirelessly to manage the situation.

“While no injury or fatality has been reported, several vehicles were swept away.

“Assessments are ongoing to determine how best to assist affected residents,” she said.

Amutenya urged community members to keep natural water channels clear of any debris and obstruction to prevent further flooding.

In case of crisis, the city has urged residents to call its emergency response and
rescue department at (061) 211-111.
