The Namibian police at the busy Windhoek-Okahandja roadblock on Friday said they have not arrested any motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol thus far.

The police said the majority of road users travelling for the Easter long weekend seemed to be complying with road rules and regulations, with only a few apprehended so far.

This was confirmed by warrant officer Hangula Mwaala, who has been on duty since early Friday morning.

“There are a few who are not complying to the regulations, with minor factors like applying headlights and driving large trailers with the wrong codes,” he said.

Mwaala said police officers are not there to punish only, but also to educate road users.

He said two individuals were driving with a learners’ licence without supervision.

Mwaala advised road users to inspect their vehicles.

“Check your tyres, the lights, and avoid overloading, because the aim is to arrive safely and preserve lives,” he said.
