The Windhoek Fire Brigade has contained the veld fires in the east of Windhoek, with no damage or injuries reported.
On Sunday, the fire brigade cautioned against veld fires on the outskirts of Ludwigsdorf, as well as fires heading in the direction of Heja Lodge east of the city and Elisenheim to the north.
Fire department chief Raymond Kapia on Monday told The Namibian teams were out until 23h00 on Sunday. They went back on Monday at 04h00 and were able to safely contain the fire.
“No damage to property or infrastructure, or injuries were reported. According to the satellite images, 2397,13 hectares burned,” Kapia said.
“The successful containment can be attributed to the fire breaks/cut lines that were created by City of Windhoek, as well as good collaboration between the fire department, members of the dog unit, surrounding farmers, residents and the media that offered a helping hand,” he said.
However, the fire brigade will continue to monitor the situation due to the current windy conditions in the city.
