No cyber security student funding – communication ministry despite recent cyberattacks

Emma Theofelus

Minister of information and communication technology Emma Theofelus says there is no funding for cyber security students.

This is despite recent reports indicating many Namibians’ vulnerability to cyberattacks.

Theofelus was speaking during the parliament session on Thursday.

Last year, a pensioner was defrauded out of N$1.1 million from her bank account by an unknown person.

Theofelus said the ministry has made strides in cybersecurity, however, due to a lack of funds, it is unable to fund students who wish to venture into such fields of study.

She advised students to make use of funding institutes such as the Namibia Student Financial Assistant Fund.

“What we need to encourage is for institutes to create funding for such courses,” she said.

She acknowledged that cybercrimes are on an increase, but believes Namibia has put in place security systems that can counter these crimes.
