Nigerian rebels move British captives

LAGOS – Nigerian rebels holding two British oil workers said yesterday they had moved them to another location after what it claimed was a botched rescue attempt by government troops in which civilians were hurt.

Soldiers had raided the communities of Ajakaja, Udungama and Okukpor in Rivers State on Friday and Saturday searching for the two British hostages, said the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).
They had opened fire indiscriminately on civilians ‘who had no idea why they were being attacked’, said the statement, sent by e-mail to AFP.
Men, women and children were among the casualties, the statement added, without giving any further details. – Nampa-AFP
