New Mayor at Walvis Bay

A NEW Mayor for Walvis Bay was elected at an extra-ordinary council meeting on Friday.

Derek Klazen (41), a woodwork teacher at De Duine Secondary School, was unanimously voted to replace former Mayor King Mandume Muatunga as the town’s first citizen. Adelheid Kandjala was elected Deputy Mayor while Muatunga will serve as Chairman of the Management Committee. In his acceptance speech, Klazen said: “I am accepting this daunting task with humility and a sense of pride….We must remember that we are not there for ourselves, but to serve the community.”Speaking to The Namibian yesterday, Klazen said his first priority was to re-examine the Walvis Bay Town Council’s strategic plan for the next three years and review the budgetary issues that had become a headache for the municipality in recent years.Klazen said he had been working closely with Muatunga and gave the assurance that the projects initiated by his predecessor would continue as usual.”[Muatunga] was very active in the community and brought projects such as the principals’ and churches’ forums to life.I’m looking forward to continue where he has left off,” said Klazen.Adelheid Kandjala was elected Deputy Mayor while Muatunga will serve as Chairman of the Management Committee. In his acceptance speech, Klazen said: “I am accepting this daunting task with humility and a sense of pride….We must remember that we are not there for ourselves, but to serve the community.”Speaking to The Namibian yesterday, Klazen said his first priority was to re-examine the Walvis Bay Town Council’s strategic plan for the next three years and review the budgetary issues that had become a headache for the municipality in recent years.Klazen said he had been working closely with Muatunga and gave the assurance that the projects initiated by his predecessor would continue as usual.”[Muatunga] was very active in the community and brought projects such as the principals’ and churches’ forums to life.I’m looking forward to continue where he has left off,” said Klazen.
