New Kaoko-Otavi prison clinic boosts inmate healthcare in Kunene

The Kaoko-Otavi Correctional Facility on Tuesday inaugurated a newly constructed prison clinic to improve healthcare and rehabilitation for prisoners in the Kunene region.

The clinic, located near Opuwo, will provide healthcare to approximately 30 inmates.

Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) commissioner general Raphael Hamunyela describes the venture as a vital joint operation between government stakeholders, traditional leaders, and community members committed to humane treatment and access to healthcare for all citizens.

“The Kaoko-Otavi experience clearly illustrates that collaboration among citizens is critical to the successful implementation of NCS plans in particular, and the broader objectives of the ministry and the government at large,” Hamunyela said at the event.

“Therefore, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all traditional authorities
and community members of this area for their unwavering support and partnership in nation-building.”

He highlighted that meaningful development can only be achieved through active involvement of community members in national programmes.

Minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security Lucia Iipumbu said at the event there are plans to develop the clinic into a hospital as the prison facility expands in the coming years.
