LABOUR ministers from six southern African countries will meet in Windhoek next week to discuss the continuing challenges of globalisation, improving the African business environment and ensuring compliance with fundamental rights in the workplace.

The two-day meeting of Government officials, and representatives of employer and worker organisations from Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi and Zambia, will review the role of social dialogue at the regional, national and enterprise level in improving performance and efficiency in the workplace. During the conference, a new technical co-operation project, entitled “Improving Labour Systems in Southern Africa” (ILSSA) will also be launched.According to the International Labour Organisation the project funded by the US Department of Labour, would broaden the assistance provided by the organisation in the region. The objective of the ILSSA project is for it to be a major public information and awareness raising campaign to increase knowledge of national law and related services. The project would focus on training to strengthen the institutional capacity and improve efficiency of the labour ministries and organisations representing employers and workers.Over the longer term, the ILSSA project would work for four years in all six countries to address the challenges in the field of labour law compliance.ILO News said the two-day meeting will also be a special focus on increasing awareness among employers and workers of their rights, obligations and services available under national labour legislation.Emerging trends in labour law reform in southern African countries would also be under the spotlight during the meeting.During the conference, a new technical co-operation project, entitled “Improving Labour Systems in Southern Africa” (ILSSA) will also be launched.According to the International Labour Organisation the project funded by the US Department of Labour, would broaden the assistance provided by the organisation in the region. The objective of the ILSSA project is for it to be a major public information and awareness raising campaign to increase knowledge of national law and related services. The project would focus on training to strengthen the institutional capacity and improve efficiency of the labour ministries and organisations representing employers and workers.Over the longer term, the ILSSA project would work for four years in all six countries to address the challenges in the field of labour law compliance.ILO News said the two-day meeting will also be a special focus on increasing awareness among employers and workers of their rights, obligations and services available under national labour legislation.Emerging trends in labour law reform in southern African countries would also be under the spotlight during the meeting.
