New approach to healthcare on way

A NEW concept in affordable healthcare and secure retirement has been introduced to Namibia. The Eros Manor Retirement Village and Paramount Healthcare Centre (PHCC) at the foot of the Eros Hills in Omuramba Road offers both.

The retirement village consists of cottages, assisted-living and frail-care units, while the healthcare centre will have a pharmacy, doctors’ consulting rooms, a Chronic Ailment Centre and a ‘Stepdown’ recovery facility. The Paramount Healthcare Centre offers affordable healthcare to all members of the public, with medical aid or without, and not only to the retirement village residents.Paramount said the challenges facing the medical aid industry in Namibia lie in creating new ways and partnerships to provide a more sustainable and affordable industry without compromising on the quality of healthcare services. The N$25 million investment in the Eros development is a deliberate partnership between Extan Development Company, Paramount Health Care and the South African Manor Group.Besides offering doctors’ consulting rooms, the centre will have a pharmacy run by Leonie Swanepoel which will dispense medicines to the public at affordable prices. The Stepdown facility will complement the traditional hospitals and day clinics in Namibia.Intermediate care is provided to post-operative and recuperating patients at a cost much lower that that of hospitals, without compromising on the healthcare. The facility is a halfway house between hospital and home. This will help medical aid funds and increase the sustainability of the medical-aid industry. The Chronic Ailment Centre will focus on the early identification of potential chronic medical conditions and the implementation of effective and preventive treatments. These conditions, if not identified and treated in time, could require more expensive treatments and even hospitalisation. The centre will initially concentrate on five of the top 10 chronic ailments in Namibia and South Africa – cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, depression and lung disease.Patients will be regularly monitored to prevent complications that can become life threatening and more costly to treat.”Prevention is better than cure,” says Koos du Toit, director of Paramount Healthcare Centre. He says the PHCC will help members of any medical aid to stretch their money by providing high quality medical services at a more affordable rate.
