Neudamm college hosts workshop for farmers

THE University of Namibia’s Neudamm Agricultural College held a one-day workshop on farm management and drought mitigation strategies at its experimental farm outside Windhoek on Thursday.

Farmers from various parts of the country and students from Unam’s Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources attended the workshop where they were presented with various farming techniques as well as demonstrations by experts in the field.

Event initiator and lecturer in the university’s veterinarian department Vimanuka Mutjavikua said: “We are giving our farmers information on farm record management, administration of vaccines and drugs, de-worming and drought mitigation strategies.”

At the end of the workshop, participant and farmer Inge Kangootui who farms in the Omeheke region said the workshop enlightened her particularly on farm management as well as how and when to vaccinate livestock.

Final year student in veterinary medicine at the college Eliphas Junias said he learned about the importance of the cold chain in the transportation and storage of vaccines.

“I also learnt about different vaccines used in Namibia, the compulsory ones and the precautionary measures to take when administering vaccines,” Junias added.

Elia Kaambo from Farm Cameron in Omaheke said the workshop was informative and his focus was on mixing livestock feeds.

“Surprisingly, cement and charcoal can be added as a mixture in animal feed to treat livestock with stomach ache,” Kaambo noted.

Kaunambili Hinamunhu, who farms in the Grootfontein area, said she learnt a lot, especially on medication administration.

“The injection part was new to me, now I know when to inject in the muscles and under the skin. Even the topic on record-keeping was important as it will help me to keep track of expenses and other information as well,” recounted Hinamunhu.
