While millions around the world frown upon the use of cannabis, especially in terms of substance abuse, the controversial herb has found a new purpose on Netflix’s ‘Cooking On High’.
The title of the show might insinuate that the heat is turned on high in the kitchen, but it could rather be the cast that’s baked. A show centered around the traditional values of a cooking show, ‘Cooking On High’ adds a twist to the competition as two judges go bud-to-bud throughout the season, creating meals with the base ingredient being marijuana.
Set in Vermont and with the new legalisation laws in place, this serene New England state is the perfect setting for the cooking show.
Having first aired on 22 June, this show is much more mellow than say, ‘Hell’s Kitchen’. And while weed is on the menu, eye-candy isn’t far behind. Muscled-up YouTube sensation Josh Leyva brings his hosting talents to the table as he guides each challenge for the chefs. Leyva is accompanied by ‘chronnoisseur’ and stand-up comedian Ngaio Bealum as the expert on the show.
Bealum is a frequent writer about cannabis for various magazines and has a syndicated cannabis advice column in weeklies throughout California. He also hosts his own podcast, a cannabis-infused travelogue titled ‘Rollin’ With Ngaio’.
The two are joined by a colourful line-up of weed aficionado judges including YouTube prankster Vitaly, rapper and musician Mod Sun, dainty comedian Heather Pasternak and rap trio Warm Brew.
‘Cooking On High’ has a chilled vibe to it as the chefs whip up weed infused grilled-cheese sandwiches or pasta dishes garnished with sprinkles of herb. While the chefs are in competition, the judges’ chemistry and serene vibes make the show a pleasant watch.
If you want to get into some Netflix and baked, catch ‘Cooking On High’ for innovative recipes for when the munchies have you feeling like raiding the kitchen.
