AFRICAN Stars maintained their perfect start to the Namibia Premier League season when they beat Citizens 1-0 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Friday evening.
Striker Panduleni Nekundi scored the winning goal on 32 minutes in a match that Stars dominated from start to finish.
Stars attacked from the start with Engelhardt Kahua, Godwin Jena and Edwin Korukuve all coming close in the early stages.
Stars coach Bobby Samaria pulled a surprise when he substituted Treasure Kauapirura with Neville Tjiueza after only 34 minutes, but two minutes later Stars took the lead when Tjiuana Tjino-Tjiua sent in a perfect cross that Nekundi steered into the net with a thumping header.
Citizens had hardly attacked, except for a few foraging runs by Steward Goagoseb, but they nearly scored at the end of the first half when Goagoseb pounced onto a poor back pass by Denis Ngueza but shot narrowly wide.
The one way traffic continued in the second half with Nekundi volleying over from a Tjiueza cross, while Jena shot wide after continuous pressure.
Neville Tjiueza headed narrowly wide while Citizens keeper Jonas Matheus saved well at Nekundi’s feet after a fine run and cross by Kahua.
Korukuve was also a constant threat down the right wing sending in some dangerous crosses.
Stars could have won by a much bigger margin but in the end they had to settle for a 1-0 win.
It was their third consecutive win which puts them at the top of the log on nine points – two ahead of second-placed Tura Magic.
