Nekundi plans to roll out animal reflectors to curb night-time road accidents

Works and transport minister Veikko Nekundi says the ministry plans to introduce reflectors for animals in communal areas to reduce nighttime road accidents caused by free-roaming domestic animals.

Speaking during the commissioning of the DR1635 road (Du Plessis Plaas to Epukiro) ceremony at Epukiro in the Omaheke region on Thursday, Nekundi said procurement is already underway to purchase the reflectors and will be placed on dogs, goats, sheep, cows, donkeys and horses.

“It is a must and it will take place. All we need to do is drive while you are sober so that you can see the reflectors,” he said.

Nekundi said this will save lives and protect people’s vehicles if animals can be identified on the roads.

“We are going to provide them for free for the first phase and allocate a quarter to each region,” he said.

He added that a testing phase will be carried out first and if results are good, the reflectors be used on all animals.
