Minister of works and transport Veikko Nekundi on Friday commissioned the 16-kilometre Engoyi-Omuntele road, built to low volume seal standard.
Speaking at Omuntele village in the Oshikoto region, Nekundi described the project as a milestone aligned with the country’s vision of inclusivity, progress and transformation.
“The primary objective of the project was to improve rural accessibility and mobility, reduce travel time, enhance road safety and minimise maintenance costs of your valuable cars and that of the road through the construction of an all-weather sealed road,” he said.
The upgraded road is expected to bring significant social and economic benefits to residents of Engoyi, Oshikulu, Lihandhi, Ondjamba, Okakoto, Okaputa, Okandombo and nearby villages by improving access to clinics, schools, agricultural centres and other essential services.
“The road enables easier access to essential services … strengthens community connectivity and contributes to rural development, safety and economic empowerment,” Nekundi said.
He cautioned residents against building within road reserves, saying such structures would be removed without compensation as provided by law.
Nekundi also announced that the government has secured funds to extend the road from Omuntele through Amilema to Omuthiya, adding that construction will start immediately.
Omuntele constituency councillor Sacky Nangula welcomed the development, saying the new road enhances connectivity and stimulates regional economic opportunities.
“It will improve transportation efficiency and stimulate regional development, provide access to needed services and bring lasting benefits to the local communities,” he said.
