The 23rd edition of the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup officially kicked off at Outjo Sport Stadium in the Kunene region on Friday.
Minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Sanet Steenkamp officially opened the event in the presence of Namibia’s 14 regional governors.
Steenkamp said the four-day event should serve as a platform where future national football and netball stars can be identified.
“This same event in the past nurtured about 450 football stars who are playing at international level.
“Therefore, today is your opportunity to make your own name,” she said.
The first football matches were played between the //Kharas and Oshikoto regions on field A, and the Zambezi and Hardap regions on field B.
Netball matches were held between the Otjozondjupa and Kavango West regions on court A, while the Erongo and Omaheke regions faced off on court B.
The tournament is expected to conclude with the finals on Monday.
Over 3 000 people from across the country are gathered for the event.
