Nearly 3 000 new voters registered in Otjozondjupa

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) in the Otjozondjupa region has so far registered nearly 3 000 new eligible voters during the general supplementary registration of voters period.

The exercise kicked off countrywide on 4 August and will run until 19 August.

Otjozondjupa regional electoral officer Victoria Amutenya, upon enquiry on Tuesday, said 2 965 new voters have been captured so far in all seven constituencies of the Otjozondjupa region.

The highest number of 635 voters was registered in the Okakarara constituency, followed by Omatako with 598 voters.

Okahandja registered 447 voters, Otjiwarongo 349, Tsumkwe 383, Grootfontein 327 and Otavi 226.

Amuntenya on Tuesday said: “Most of those we registered since 4 August are new applicants, followed by those who changed their addresses. Very few turned up for reprinting duplicates of their voter’s cards.”

The registration process is continuing from 08h00 until 19h00 from Monday to Saturday, while Sundays are reserved for uploading collected voter information, she said.

A total of 52 teams in the region are conducting the exercise targeting Namibians who lost their voter’s cards, turned 18 years, changed their names and surnames, relocated from their previous towns and constituencies, or who want to replace their damaged ECN voter’s cards to enable them to participate in the regional council and local authority elections on 26 November this year. – Nampa
