NC sympathises with quake victims

NATIONAL Council member Johnny Hakaye yesterday expressed condolences on behalf of the Namibian people with the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck South Asia on Saturday.

The quake is feared to have killed as many as 40 000 people in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, while injuring more than 42 000. Reminding the House that Namibia forms part of the global village, Hakaye suggested that the NC send a formal document to the affected countries registering Namibia’s “sincere, heartfelt sympathy”.His suggestion was unanimously accepted by the rest of the Council.Thousands of children are feared to have died in the quake, which struck just as schools were starting classes early on Saturday morning, either being buried under collapsed concrete buildings, or after being engulfed by landslides. Many of the affected were also victims of disaster earlier this year, when avalanches and floods followed unprecedented rain and snowfall in February.Reminding the House that Namibia forms part of the global village, Hakaye suggested that the NC send a formal document to the affected countries registering Namibia’s “sincere, heartfelt sympathy”.His suggestion was unanimously accepted by the rest of the Council.Thousands of children are feared to have died in the quake, which struck just as schools were starting classes early on Saturday morning, either being buried under collapsed concrete buildings, or after being engulfed by landslides. Many of the affected were also victims of disaster earlier this year, when avalanches and floods followed unprecedented rain and snowfall in February.
