NATIONAL Council chairman Asser Kapere has called on retailers not to increase the prices of basic foods that Government has exempted from tax.
Kapere said in the National Council yesterday that some retailers have increased the prices of basic foods since the 15 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on them was scrapped on August 1. “My appeal to retailers is that they should please bear with the desperate situation in which consumers find themselves,” Kapere said. The food items that are now VAT free are dried and fresh beans, sunflower oil, lard, bread and flour.During this session, the National Council will review three bills passed by the National Assembly. These are the Road Traffic and Transportation Amendment Bill, Plant Quarantine Bill and the State-owned Enterprises Amendment Bill. The bills were read for the first time yesterday.”My appeal to retailers is that they should please bear with the desperate situation in which consumers find themselves,” Kapere said. The bills were read for the first time yesterday.
