THE National Council resumed its session yesterday with the first reading of the Local Authorities Amendment Bill.
The bill, introduced in the National Assembly last month by Local and Regional Government Minister Jerry Ekandjo, extends the term of office of local authorities until November 30 next year.The next local authority election – which was due next month – will now be held sometime next year together with the regional council election.Ekandjo said when motivating the bill that holding local and regional elections at the same time would eliminate unnecessary duplication and would be more cost effective.The bill is expected to be passed by the end of the week.The National Council will also consider the 2009/2010 budget currently debated in the National Assembly
