The National Assembly adjourned earlier on Tuesday in honour of Swapo parliamentarian James Uerikua, who died on Friday.
Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila announced the adjournment, saying the House would resume on Wednesday following the president’s state of the nation address.
“I would like to announce that it has been agreed, following consultation among the chief whips of the various political parties represented in the House, that we do not proceed with today’s business on account of this dark cloud that has befallen this House and the nation,” she said.
Meanwhile, president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah visited Uerikua’s family at his home on Tuesday. Several members of parliament joined her.
Speaking to the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation after the adjournment, Swapo’s youngest parliamentarian, Fenny Tutjavi, described Uerikua as her mentor.
“He always gave me a platform to speak. Having him gone feels so unreal and disheartening. He left so soon, and there was so much to learn from him. He had so much to offer the Namibian people. He was a great pillar,” she said.
National Democratic Party leader Martin Lukato described Uerikua as an active young parliamentarian with a brilliant mind.
