Member of parliament Imms Nashinge says Namibia’s nuclear energy must be exported with value addition to boost the economy and uplift citizens’ lives.
Nashinge says this would create an opportunity to create more jobs given Namibia’s high unemployment rate.
Nashinge was speaking in Russia during an interview with RT, a Russian broadcasting media company, on Friday.
He and other parliamentarians are attending World Atomic Week in Russia from 25 to 28 September.
“As a lawmaker representing Namibia, it is a great opportunity to learn from other countries and new innovations and technology, and to see how Namibia can benefit and add value to its valuable mineral resources.
“This is an opportunity to understand where the world is heading in nuclear energy, especially Russia and other big companies such as Rosatam, which is contributing greatly globally as far as nuclear energy is concerned,” he said.
The lawmaker emphasised that such avenues would allow Namibia to see what it can do in terms of partnering with Russian companies so that the country does not only mine and export uranium in raw form, but starts adding value to it.
