Nandi-Ndaitwah urges Swapo delegates to honour fallen presidents

Swapo vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged party delegates to honour the late presidents to the best of their ability.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said this during the party’s extraordinary congress in Windhoek on Saturday.

Former president Hage Geingob died on 4 February 2024 resulting in an extraordinary congress being convened to fill his position within the party, while founding president Sam Nujoma was laid to rest on 1 March 2025.

About 700 delegates from various regions have convened to elect Nandi-Ndaitwah as party president.

“This extraordinary congress is born out of extraordinary circumstances where our third president, Dr Hage Geingob, was taken away from us. As members who are representing the majority here today, we must therefore exercise our utmost ability to honour our founding leaders,” she said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said that electing her as party president will ensure the party’s commitment to remaining unshakable as it continues to serve the nation.

She also expressed gratitude to the delegates for electing her as president-elect, while calling for togetherness and commitment to make Namibia a better country for the next five years during her term.

Nandi-Ndaitwah is expected to be sworn in on 21 March as Namibia’s first woman president.
