President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah (NNN) has made history by becoming Swapo’s first female president in the party’s 65-year history.
Nandi-Ndaitwah was declared the duly elected Swapo president during the sixth extraordinary congress at the Windhoek Country Club Resort on Saturday.
She said her appointment by delegates to serve as the president of the party demonstrates the trust they have put in her, and vows to lead them.
“I step forward to serve you as your president after the passing of our two presidents Dr Hage Geingob and founding president. By honouring them through unison and caring on their values is the befitting way to their tribute,” she said.
The declaration comes after a lengthy closed door session by the party delegates.
