Nandi-Ndaitwah hails former Ghanaian first lady as champion of women’s rights

Following the death of Ghana’s former first lady, Nana Agyeman-Rawlings, president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has hailed her as a champion of women’s rights and community empowerment.

Agyeman-Rawlings died aged 76 after a short illness on Thursday. She was the wife of Ghana’s former president, flight lieutenant Jerry Rawlings.

Agyeman-Rawlings served as first lady from June 1979 to September 1979 and again from December 1981 to January 2001.

“I have learnt with deep sadness about the passing of her excellency Nana Agyeman-Rawlings, the former first lady of the Republic of Ghana, who played a prominent role in Ghanaian politics and social advocacy.

“She was recognised for her leadership in championing women’s rights and empowering communities in the country,“ Nandi-Ndaitwah says.

During her reign, Nandi-Ndaitwah says Agyeman-Rawlings established the 31st December Women’s Movement, an initiative aimed at empowering Ghanaian women through entrepreneurship, education, and political participation.

Nandi-Ndaitwah says the former first lady advocated for the emancipation of women at every level of development to enable them to contribute to Ghana’s socio-economic and political progress.

“On behalf of the people and the government of the Republic of Namibia, I extend my heartfelt condolences to my dear brother, president John Mahama, the children, the entire bereaved family, and the people of the Republic of Ghana on their loss,” Nandi-Ndaitwah says.

She says Namibia stands in solidarity with the people and the government of Ghana during this time.

“We keep you all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” she says.
