NAMPOST has reacted with surprise at “unsubstantiated claims” that its services are deteriorating daily, with a lot of mail going missing.
DTA chairman Johan de Waal claimed last week that he had been contacted by many NamPost clients who complained that mail was unduly delayed, parcels not delivered at all and that the general services were deteriorating daily. He said the DTA would table a motion to discuss problems at NamPost when Parliament resumes.NamPost CEO Sakaria Nghikembua called the allegations “baseless”.”Mr de Waal did not present any specific cases but preferred to make unsubstantiated allegations based on hearsay. It is regrettable that he also did not even bother to establish the facts with NamPost before he went about making his public pronouncements. This is indeed regrettable coming, as it does, from a respected public personality,” the NamPost chief said.He said many of the complaints NamPost receive with regard to mail relate to letters or parcels sent from other countries and not received in Namibia.”On many occasions, we have emphasised the fact that Namibia Post Limited cannot be accountable for mail which has not entered our mail stream in Namibia. We can state without qualification that as soon as any letters or parcels are received by us, these are sorted and delivered to the various addresses in a timely manner,” Nghikembua said.He said the efficiency of NamPost’s mail operations was demonstrated by letters sent from Namibia to other countries.”Because we have control over the route that such mail and parcels must take, we are able to ensure that we choose the most direct and reliable route to the end destination,” he said.He said mail sorting, while labour-intensive at present, was a straightforward exercise. However, if some mail gets wrongly sorted, clients re-deposit the missorted items into an appropriate box at the post office.Nghikembua invited De Waal to visit any post office in the country to observe the mail sorting process. We do have sorting and delivery targets and we keep to those,” he said.He said the DTA would table a motion to discuss problems at NamPost when Parliament resumes.NamPost CEO Sakaria Nghikembua called the allegations “baseless”.”Mr de Waal did not present any specific cases but preferred to make unsubstantiated allegations based on hearsay. We do have sorting and delivery targets and we keep to those,” he said.
