Chaos erupted at the Namibia Post Ltd (NamPost) headquarters in Windhoek when pensioners discovered they could not access their pension grants yesterday.
“I came to NamPost to find out what happened to my pension fund, but no one would tell me anything,” Tuyeni Iyambo said.
She said she relies on her pension grant to buy stock for her kapana business at Stop n Shop at Okuryangava to support her grandchildren.
She said there was a lack of communication regarding the delay, as pensioners and disability grant beneficiaries who use commercial banks received their money on time.
Iyambo said pensioners usually receive their grants on the first Tuesday of every month.
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
The Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare has announced that technical difficulties are to be blamed for the delays at NamPost.
“The ministry hereby informs disability and old-age grant beneficiaries that payments for beneficiaries receiving grants via NamPost have been delayed due to technical difficulties,” the ministry said in a press release yesterday.
Beneficiaries were advised to collect their grants tomorrow.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience,” the statement read.
‘LACK OF COMMUNICATION’
Another pensioner, Maanie Ross from Groot Aub, yesterday said she struggled to get clarity on the delay due to a lack of communication from the government.
“Normally we receive our money on the first Tuesday of every month, but today there was nothing. NamPost officials could not provide us with any information either,” she said.
Ross said she does not have a smartphone or access to social media to see updates, and therefore travelled to Windhoek to find out what caused the delays.
“When I found out that my pension grant was not paid into the NamPost account, I called and then came to Windhoek to find out what happened,” she said.
