Namibians who fled during colonialism to be granted citizenship

The Cabinet has approved an amendment to the Constitution to enable granting those who fled Namibia prior to independence citizenship.

Minister of information and communication technology Peya Mushelenga yesterday during a feedback session on Cabinet decisions said citizens by descent or the descendants of Namibians who fled Namibia prior to independence as a result of colonialism, but who have since relocated to Namibia, will granted Namibian citizenship.

Meanwhile, Mushelenga also said the Cabinet took note of the existence of the government’s internship policy, and has approved of the implementation of the national internship programme.

“The Cabinet has approved the youth employment tax incentive and 50 percent contribution by the government towards internship costs, which is capped at N$50 000 per intern per year,” he said.

Mushelenga said the Cabinet has further approved budgetary provisions in terms of tax incentives to employers and government corporate income tax.

“The budgetary provisions for phase 2 of work-integrated learning, including employer training, through the normal budget cycle with effect from 1 April 2024 . . ” he said.
