Namibians score 8 medals in Maputo

THE Namibian team that participated at the just-ended CAA Southern Region Senior African Championships returned home with a total of eight medals (one gold, one silver and six bronze) from Maputo, Mozambique.

Tjipekapora Herunga was the only gold medal winner for Namibia in the 400m after crossing the line in a time of 53.90.She finished ahead of Swaziland’s Phumile Ndzinsa who finished second in 54.40 and Botswana’s Lydia Mashila who crossed the line in 54.60 to get the bronze medal.The silver medal came from the men’s 4×100 relay team, which finished behind South Africa who won the race in 40.74 while the Namibians finished second with a time of 41.14. Zimbabwe was third with a time of 41.31.Charlene Engelbrecht won the bronze medal in the discus throw when she threw a distance of 43.22 metres. Maryke Oberholzer (50.78m) and Ishke Senekal (45.68m) from South Africa were first and second respectively.Engelbrecht was also third in the shot put after she threw a distance of 13.21m.Christof Shaanika was third in the 1 500m after he crossed the line in 3:51.50 behind Sampson Ngoope (3:50.80) from South Africa and Flavio Siholhe (3:51.20) from Mozambique.In the 200m, Hitjevirue Kaanjuka and Globine Mayova were both third. Mayova had a time of 25.19 in the women’s race behind Sonja van der Merwe (24.37) of South Africa and Pier Louis (25.13) of Mauritius.Kaanjuka was third in the men’s race with a time of 21.92 behind Mosito Rehate from Lesotho and Sibusiso Matsenjwa from Swaziland (21.92).The women’s 4x100m team also won a bronze medal after they finished the race with a time of 48.07. The relay was won by Mauritius (47.47) while the South African (48.07) team was second.Namibia came seventh overall on the medal count. South Africa were first with a total of 61 medals (21 gold, 17 silver and 13 bronze). Lesotho were a distant second with a total of 10 medals (four gold, three silver and three bronze), while Botswana came third with 11 medals (three gold, two silver and six bronze).A total of 10 countries participated in the two-day event namely Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius and Angola. – namibiasport.com.na
