Namibians need to log in to opportunities

MORE than 300 Namibians have benefited from India’s International and Technical Co-operation (Itec) programme since Independence, the Indian High Commissioner to Namibia said last week.Namibians had gained skills in fields that will help develop the country.

Kumar said that generally the Itec programme was helping a great number of people from developing countries around the world in sharpening their skills. He said India has also taught Namibians how to produce plastic products through establishing the Namibia-India Plastic Technology Centre at Ondangwa.Kumar was speaking at an event in Windhoek to mark the 41st Itec Day.Namibians have also attended courses in India on SME promotion, entrepreneurship, development, journalism, diplomacy, banking, information technology and defence.Speaking at the same event, Foreign Affairs Minister Marco Hausiku said because Namibia lacks people with skills who can help to successfully transform the country’s economy, it is important that they use the Itec programme to gain these skills.”Our people must take up every chance that comes their way in terms of training.Itec should be taken very seriously,” said Hausiku. The Foreign Minister said Namibians do not get positions in many international organisations because they do not go for the necessary training that will help them get such positions. He said although people are made aware of helpful programmes such as Itec, more often than not the response is very weak.He said India has also taught Namibians how to produce plastic products through establishing the Namibia-India Plastic Technology Centre at Ondangwa.
