Namibians Celebrated at Rockstar Awards

Africa is the cradle of civilisation, a hub of arts and culture and the birthplace of some of the greatest musicians, artists and creatives across the board.

Often sidelined by the rest of the world, Africa is finally celebrating itself and its phenomenal and influential people with the upcoming Rockstar Awards, and Namibia is not left behind.

Last Tuesday, the first round of nominations kicked off in the capital, seeing some of the country’s biggest names on the celebration list.

The Rockstar Awards claim to be, historically, the first African continental awards that recognise the works of leading African industry shapers across a vast platform and industries, as well as personalities from across the world ‘who have influence on and relevance to audiences on the African continent’.

Some of the categories include music, entertainment, gaming, film, media, sport, environment and conservation, sustainable fashion, beauty, arts, business and innovation.

“Because these awards recognise the most influential African personalities across the continent and across the globe, accordingly the total list of nominees will be split into parts. They will then be announced live from several host countries covering all corners across the African continent over a series of consecutive dates, inclusive of the major Pan African languages English, French, Portuguese and Kiswahili,” the organisers told The Southern Times.

An exciting time for Namibia to be recognised on such a global scale, some of the nominees include the country’s very own princess, business and media mogul Dillish Mathews for the glam star award, and one of the leading ladies in music, Top Cheri, for rising star and Afropop star alongside Sally Boss Madam. DJ Alba nabbed herself a nomination as deckstar and young and vibrant hip-hop artist Skrypt is in the running for live star. Tim Ekandjo saw himself nominated in two categories, game changer and mega mogul, while Swakopmund was nominated for star city and Swakopmund’s The Dome for showbiz star.

Top Cheri didn’t take long to express her excitement on Twitter last week, posting: “Beloveds yesterday I got nominated in three categories for The Rockstar Awards … Namibia to the world!”

Skrypt took the time to also show gratitude for his nomination and simultaneously announced that new music is on the way. “I’ve been nominated for a Rockstar Award alongside Africa’s biggest personalities. Gratitude is a must. I’m giving you some music tomorrow! When it reigns, it pours,” he posted.

Speaking to The Weekender, the dynamic hip-hop artist said although the nomination is an honour, he is treating it like any other award nomination.

“This is just a stepping stone for Namibian hip-hop to be showcased.

“This is just a bigger platform for Namibia to bombard the continent with our art. Even if we don’t win, we are out there and being recognised,” he said.
