Namibian truck drivers operating along the Kasumbalesa-Lubumbashi Road into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been warned to remain vigilant amid growing safety concerns at key transit points.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Walvis Bay Corridor Group said the evolving operational conditions along parts of the corridor require increased caution from drivers and transport operators.
“Transport operators are encouraged to maintain regular route assessments, strengthen internal communication with drivers, and coordinate closely with relevant authorities and corridor partners,” corridor group acting chief executive Edward Shivute said.
The corridor group advised drivers to follow company operating procedures and avoid extended stops at unsecured locations wherever possible.
It said this follows reports of congestion at high-traffic truck holding areas, which can affect normal traffic flows and increase the risk of accidents or security incidents.
The statement noted that the Haut-Katanga provincial government in the DRC has taken steps to support traffic management and road safety along the Kasumbalesa-Lubumbashi Road.
The corridor group acknowledged these efforts but urged continued vigilance.
It said it remains engaged with corridor stakeholders and authorities and will continue monitoring developments to support the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of goods.
“All stakeholders are encouraged to prioritise driver well-being and operational prudence as integral elements of corridor performance,” Shivute said.
The corridor group said, where possible, drivers with firsthand experiences of the corridor’s challenges would be consulted to strengthen the advisory process.
