Namibian Student Shines at South African University

Late last year, a young Namibian student, Alette Slabber, was awarded with a gold medal for academics at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of the Western Cape’s prize giving ceremony.

Alette, who was one of 71 final year students, was named not only the top achiever in her final year, but was also received a gold medal as the top academic achiever over the full five years of study towards a degree in

dentistry (B.Ch.D.) On top of this, Alette walked away with the awards for the best achiever in four of the subjects in her graduate course.

Alette, who matriculated from St Paul’s College in Windhoek in 2008, said that she wasn’t expecting to do as well as she did, as 2013 was a very tough year academically for her. She added that the competition was stiff amongst her fellow students but that she worked hard consistently over the years. “I’ve never really been someone who was happy with 50%, I always aimed for 75% and above,” Alette said.

She is currently doing community service as a dentist at the Calvinia Hospital in the Tankwa Karoo of the Northern Cape and said that she has applied to a few institutions to further her studies. She plans to do a post-doctorate diploma some time in the future. Alette also has plans to return to Namibia, where she hopes to join an existing practice until she can open one of her own.
