THE Namibian team that competed at the South African Country Districts Tournament returned as heroes over the weekend.

The team was made up of John Lingashi (captain), Norbert Dorgeloh, Angelo Titus, Tyc Kakehongo and Nelson Herunga. The tournament, which started on May 14, took place in Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa. The central venue for the tournament was Margate and comprised of a districts section for top players and a festival section for social players. The Namibian team led by John Lingashi finished second in their group to North West District, who played Lower South Coast District in the final. The team then lost narrowly to South Western Districts for the third- and fourth-place playoffs. The Lower South Coast team, who were the home team, beat defending champions North West 3-2to claim overall victory. The players, who described the tournament as the adventure of a lifetime, were happy just to be able to take part in the tournament. They thanked the Namibian Squash Association (NSA) for encouraging them to participate even though they had to pay for the trip from their own pockets as no sponsors could be found. They also gave credit to the NSA Vice chairman and team member Nelson Herunga, who organised the trip and provided his own car for transport.Namibia was also honoured with the selection of John Lingashi to be part of the Provincial A Team and Norbert Dorgeloh Provincial B Team to play in the Jarvis Cup in July.Lingashi, who did not lose a single game at the event, is also to captain the side. His understudy Dorgeloh, 18 years old, did not drop a match at the event and showed great maturity for one so young. He was described as having all the attributes that make a great squash player such as patience, grace, presence of mind and the perfect execution of technique.
