Namibian medical student and model Sandra Haimbala recently made waves in Moscow after placing in the top seven and winning best national costume award at the Miss Africa Russia pageant.
Currently pursuing medical studies in Russia, Haimbala describes the experience as a “thrilling diversion” from her academic life.
“A text message can change one’s life, and for me, this was certainly the case,” she says.
“I moved to Russia to study medicine, not knowing it would open doors to fulfil a childhood dream of becoming a model.”
The annual Miss Africa Russia competition, held under the theme ‘Impact Her’, brought together contestants from across the continent, including Namibia, Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, Haiti, and Zimbabwe.
Haimbala says she was encouraged by a friend to audition, a decision she calls life-changing.
“When I said yes, I began a journey that redefined my dreams and welcomed me to a world beyond imagination,” she says.
Throughout the competition, she travelled to St Petersburg and Moscow, taking part in photo shoots and cultural activities.
“Each shoot had a different theme, and contestants were encouraged to be themselves while learning from one another. From mastering catwalks to public speaking, every moment was transformative,” she says.
Despite the glamour, Haimbala says balancing her medical studies with the pageant’s demands was challenging.
“Finding dancers and sponsors was difficult, and preparations were financially demanding. But with support from my friends, family, and the Miss Africa Russia team, I managed to overcome these hurdles.”
She says the pageant provided her with a sense of belonging among participants from various countries and strengthened her confidence.
“Because of Miss Africa Russia, I found my voice and confidence. I want Namibian girls to know they belong – even in the global world.”
Looking ahead, Haimbala hopes to continue her involvement in pageantry and expand into runway modelling, fashion presentations, and product promotion.
“I plan to build a strong reputation in the fashion and beauty world while succeeding in the medical field. Every step brings me closer to new experiences and growth,” she says.
Reflecting on the experience, she says the competition went beyond glamour.
“Behind the lights and photo shoots, I discovered friendships, personal strength, and lessons that will last a lifetime. It was a true journey of self-discovery.”
The Miss Africa Russia pageant, which celebrates African culture and women’s empowerment, continues to provide a platform for African students in Russia to showcase their heritage and ambition on an international stage.
