Namibian Heritage Week opens at Rehoboth

The annual Namibian Heritage Week, aimed at showcasing Namibia’s culture, historic background and natural heritage to the world, has officially started at Rehoboth.

The week-long event is being held at the youth complex from 15 to 21 September.

This year’s event’s theme is ‘Bahindi Belambi Iye Chizo Chetu,’ a Subiya phrase that translates to ‘torchbearers of our heritage’.

Hardap governor Riaan McNab says people without knowledge of their history, origin and culture are like a tree without roots.

“We pay homage to the sacrifices, dedication and vision of our torch bearers who left us with a very rich history to be proud of. As we celebrate heritage week, let us recommit ourselves to safeguarding our culture. Let us embrace our heritage, educate the youth and promote the rich diversity that defines Africa,” McNab says.

Rehoboth Baster kaptein Jacky Britz urges the public not to shy away from their heritage and culture.

“Don’t ever be shy of where you come from. When we honour our heritage we honour those who come before us. These are the people who have passed us a sense of belonging. Culture is not from the past, but a torch that must be carried forward. May the legacy that we build today shape the destiny of tomorrow,” Britz says.

Kasama Gerhard, the culture officer at the Hardap Regional Council’s education department, says the week-long celebration at the town will include a variety of inclusive and educational activities such as cultural exhibitions, traditional attire displays, storytelling, traditional music, dance performances, traditional games, educational talks and workshops on heritage preservation.

“Heritage Week is an opportunity for Namibians to celebrate their heritage. It encourages Namibians to keep culture alive and to pass on inherited traditions and knowledge to our descendants. Heritage gives us pride in our identity,” Gerhard says.
