WINDHOEK – Namibia’s Under-15 girls’ football team on Monday lost 3-2 to Papua New Guinea in their fifth and sixth place playoffs at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) underway in Nanjing, China.
In their opening match against Mexico on 17 August, the team lost 9-0 and in their second game on the 20 August, China beat Namibia 10-0.
The YOG is an international multi-sports event organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
On Monday against Papua New Guinea, the team managed to score their first goals at the tournament through Ignacia Haoses, and Ivone Irene Kooper, but Papua New Guinea won the match 3-2.
This latest loss meant that Namibia has now completed their participation in the Youth Games in the football category without winning a match, conceding 22 goals in three games and only managed to score twice.
Meanwhile, Eugene Niemann landed in seventh place in the Pool B final of the Men’s Javelin Throw.
Since the Youth Games started, Namibia has not won a medal.The Games are held every four years in staggered summer and winter events, consistent with the current Olympic Games’ format.
This is the second time that the IOC is hosting the Games after the first event in Singapore in 2010.
The Games started on 16 August and will draw to an end on 28 August. – Nampa
