Namibian chef wins South Africa’s ‘Ultimate Braai Master’

LOCAL chef from Outjo, Nadia Botha and her boyfriend Jacques Bester, emerged victorious when their team won the second season of the South African reality show, ‘Ultimate Braai Master’.

The final episode was screened on SABC 3 on 18 December last year.

While Nadia is a chef, Jacques had no formal cooking experience, but this did not keep the duo from walking away with the title of Ultimate Braai Master 2013 with prize money of N$500 000, a Renault Koleos 4×4 valued at N$340 000 with Front Runner accessories to the value of N$15 000.

Botha, who works in the tourism industry said that she is extremely happy and excited about winning.

“We did not think we would make it at all. When we did the Cape Town audition and went through it was still not real, every time we went through it was a surprise to us both,” an excited Botha said.

When they applied for the competition, Nadia was working for the Olive Grove Guesthouse but had to quit her job because she could not get leave for the two months time required for the competition.

Her mother, Sylvia Botha, expressed excitement, saying that she is glad her daughter took the chance to take part in the competition especially because it is something she loves.

The competition started off with 15 teams who went on a road trip with celebrated South African chef Justin Bonello.

They drove more than 6 000 km across South Africa and were required to braai in different places.

“For the last episode they made us braai for nine hours. They brought us different ingredients every hour and then we had to prepare a braai in that hour. It was a lot of braaing and I remember I was so tired when we finally finished,” Botha said.

She added that although she is not too sure, she thinks that it was definitely the tripe dish that gave them the winning mark. Nadia vowed that if the opportunity or something similar presented itself, they would definitely enter again.

“It’s so different now after taking part in the competition, you learn so much and gain so much experience,” Nadia said.

The competition last year saw teams of mother and daughter, married couples, friends and mentors as well as cousins take part.

Each team consisted of a braai master and a braai buddy, Nadia was the only braai buddy and contender from Namibia.
