Athletes representing nine sports codes will represent Namibia during the second African Youth Games set to take place in Gaborone, Botswana during May this year.
The codes are athletics, wrestling, beach volleyball, girls’ football, netball, swimming, boxing, trampoline, tumbling, and golf.
The Games which are scheduled for 22 to 31 May, will attract around 4 000 athletes from 54 African countries to participate in more than 14 sports disciplines.
Local sports consultant Quinton-Steele Botes told Nampa on Tuesday the various sports federations are now finalising teams to represent Namibia, as the names of the athletes must be submitted by the end of February.
The Games cater for athletes in the 14 to 18 year age range. For the African athletes, the Games will serve as a useful preparation platform for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China (August 2014). The International Sport Federations of Athletics, Basketball and Swimming have also agreed to use Gaborone 2014 as a qualifying tournament for Nanjing 2014.
The African Youth Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years to complement the current All Africa Games. The first games was hosted by Rabat, Morocco in 2010.
